Handcrafted
Wood Furniture Design
The study of design has been a major pursuit during most of
my life. I have a Masters Degree in Architecture from Virginia
Tech, a keen interest in the fine arts of painting, photography
and sculpture, and have spent many months traveling the world
during an intensive exploration of urban design and architecture
in Europe and the Mediterranean. All of these inputs, not to
mention careful contemplation of furniture of all kinds, have
affected my approach to handcrafted
wood furniture design, and although I would loosely classify
my studio furniture pieces as contemporary, they are rooted
in myriad visual influences. Rather than try to describe the
"style" of a handcrafted wood furniture piece, I prefer to let
the work speak for itself. By intent, the designs do not conform
to any particular period or movement. These handcrafted wood
furniture designs are meant to stand on their own as enduring
artistic creations. They will be as "current" one-hundred years
from now as they are today.
On Technique: Custom Made Furniture
My custom made furniture
pieces are handcrafted using traditional methods as well as
some innovative techniques I have developed on my own. Many
of my custom wood furniture pieces are embellished with exotic
woods such as ebony, wenge and rosewood inlays. Often, I employ
a special technique I've developed to join contrasting woods
along a curve to help achieve the organic flowing lines that
characterize my work. Also, I frequently build in bevels and
curved forms where straight lines would be the norm. To see
